Peptides and Exorphins in the Autism Spectrum
Abstract
Problem: Some researchers have not found the opioids in urine of autistic children. We have therefore looked at this problem again.
Method: Mass spectrometry and fragmentation mass spectrometry (MS/MS) have been carried out on peaks from the HPLC that show co-chromatography with synthetic standards and peaks that are shared by different autistic children.
Results: In quickly frozen urine we find the presence of exorphins, and can also demonstrate a rather fast
break down at room temperature of these peptides in urine.
Conclusion: ...

GABA System Dysfunction in Autism and Related Disorders: From Synapse to Symptoms
Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental syndromes characterised by repetitive behaviours and restricted interests, impairments in social behavior and relations, and in language and communication. These symptoms are also observed in a number of developmental disorders of known origin, including Fragile X Syndrome, Rett syndrome, and Fetal Anticonvulsant Syndrome. While these conditions have diverse etiologies, and poorly understood pathologies, emerging evidence suggests that they may ...

The Kynurenine Pathway As a Novel Link between Allergy and the Gut Microbiome
In the past few decades, the indoleamine 2,3 dioxygenase (IDO) subset of the kynurenine (KYN) pathway of tryptophan (TRP) metabolism has been the subject of much research in the area of immune tolerance. In this review, we aim to incorporate new findings on this pathway in relation to allergy and the gut microbiome, while providing a comprehensive overview of the pathway itself. Stimulated by interferon gamma, IDO acts as a tolerogenic, immunosuppressive enzyme to attenuate allergic responses by the induction of ...

Involvement of Neuroinflammation during Brain Development in Social Cognitive Deficits in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Schizophrenia
ABSTRACT
Development of social cognition, a unique and high-order function, depends on brain maturation from childhood to adulthood in humans. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia have similar social cognitive deficits, although age of onset in each disorder is different. Pathogenesis of these disorders is complex and contains several features, including genetic risk factors, environmental risk factors, and sites of abnormalities in the brain. ...

Is a Subtype of Autism an Allergy of the Brain?
ABSTRACT
Background: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by deficits in social communication and language and the presence of repetitive behaviors that affect as many as 1 in 50 US children. Perinatal stress and environmental factors appear to play a significant role in increasing the risk for ASDs. There is no definitive
pathogenesis, which therefore significantly hinders the development of a cure.
Objective: We aimed to identify publications using basic or clinical data that suggest a possible association between atopic ...
