Analysis of the concentration of vitamin E in erythrocytes of patients with celiac disease
Abstract
Introduction: Consumption of gluten proteins leads to an enteropathy characterised by lymphocytic infiltration of mucous membrane, crypts hypertrophy, and atrophy of villi. Enteropathy leads to disturbances in the immune system as well as secondary deficiency of vitamin E.
Aim: Analysis of the concentration of vitamin E in erythrocytes of patients with celiac disease.
Material and methods: Three experimental groups were distinguished among 77 patients with histologically confirmed ...

An unusual case of hypercalcemia in a patient of concomitant hypoparathyroidism and celiac disease
Summary
Milk alkali syndrome has shown resurgence with increase in use of (prescription or non prescription) calcium
supplements. Cases of iatrogenic vitamin D intoxication has also increased due to increasing use of high doses of injectable vitamin D formulations by physicians, surgeons, orthopaedicians, gynecologists and other specialties inadvertently. Here, we present an unusual case of a 17-year-old boy who presented with iatrogenic hypercalcemia as a result of combination ...

Vitamin D, Neurosteroids and Autism
Summary
Vitamin D had been for a long time investigated for its effects on bone metabolism. Recently has been observed that the incidence of some neurodevelopmental disorders (including autism) increases hand in hand with vitamin D deficiency. Indeed, vitamin D was reported to modulate the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors; moreover, its receptor was found in the central nervous system. Vitamin D deficiency was therefore assessed as a risk factor for autism, however the biological mechanism has not yet been revealed. In ...

Targeted Nutritional and Behavioral Feeding Intervention for a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder
A variety of feeding issues and concerns, including food aversion, food selectivity, and complete food refusal, are not uncommon among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Other underlying issues are often comorbid with the concerns for feeding and ASD. These may include food allergies, gastrointestinal issues, oral motor issues, and swallowing disorders. The refusal to consume particular foods coupled with the inability to tolerate, digest, and absorb these foods can compromise ...

Relative abundance of short chain and polyunsaturated fatty acids in propionic acid-induced autistic features in rat pups as potential markers in autism
Abstract
Background: Fatty acids are essential dietary nutrients, and one of their important roles is providing polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for the growth and function of nervous tissue. Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are a group of compounds derived from the host microbiome that were recently linked to effects on the gut, the brain, and behavior. They are therefore linked to neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism. ...

Nutritional Status of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Do We Know Enough?
ABSTRACT
The incidence of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) is on the rise; therefore, well-timed screening is important. Given that this is a nutritionally vulnerable population, it is imperative to conduct a detailed nutritional assessment so that timely and intensive interventions can be recommended. This review article summarizes the research, focusing on the nutritional status of individuals with ASDs based on their nthropometric
measurements, biomarkers, and dietary assessmen...

Nutrition and Autism: Intervention Compared with Identification
I read with interest the paper by Ranjan and Nasser (1) reviewing nutritional status, biometrics, metabolic processes, and eating patterns in autistic children. Emphasis was placed on potential biomarkers to enable earlier diagnosis, with less attention on the potential of nutrition to prevent or modify the occurrence and expression of autism.
More research is needed in looking at the role of dietary FAs and antioxidants in the pathogenesis, as well as in the possible prevention of autistic phenotypic expression....
