Bone Accrual in Males with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Abstract
Objective—To test the hypothesis that bone accrual over a 4-year period is reduced in boys with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared with typically developing controls.
Study design—Twenty-five boys with ASD and 24 controls were assessed for bone outcomes. Fourteen boys with ASD and 11 controls were assessed both at baseline and after 4 years. The mean subject age was 11.0 ± 1.6 years at study initiation and 14.9 ± 1.6 years at follow-up. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the spine, hip, and whole body using ...

Autism spectrum disorder and low vitamin D at birth: a sibling control study
Abstract
Background: Insufficient vitamin D activity has attracted increasing interest as a possible underlying risk factor in
disorders of the central nervous system, including autism.
Methods: In this study, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was analysed in 58 Sweden-born sibling pairs, in which one child had autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the other did not. The study group consisted of two representative samples; 47 Gothenburg sibling pairs with mixed ethnicities and 11 Stockholm sibling pairs with Somali ...

Autism: Will vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and early childhood reduce the recurrence rate of autism in newborn siblings?
A b s t r a c t
Background: Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in the world including the vulnerable group of pregnant women. Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is hypothesized to contribute to the cause of autism. Further, it is hypothesized that vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and early childhood will reduce the recurrence rate of autism in newborn siblings.
Methods: To investigate the hypothesis an open label prospective study was ...

Women with epilepsy and post partum bleeding – Is there a role for vitamin K supplementation?
A B S T R A C T
Purpose: Guidelines for women with epilepsy (WWE) are advising those on enzyme inducing drugs EIAEDs to take vitamin K the last month of pregnancy. The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether WWE have a higher frequency of large post partum hemorrhage. Secondary we wanted to see if this was more severe in women taking EIAEDs, and also to evaluate whether those receiving prenatal vitamin K supplementation have a less pronounced risk.
Methods: All patients (n = ...

Vitamin D Levels in Children and Adolescents with Antiepileptic Drug Treatment
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the relationship of 25(OH)D3 levels with anticonvulsant use and other possible factors in epileptic children and adolescents.
Materials and Methods: We studied 143 patients with epilepsy (90 boys, 53 girls; 11.21±4.49 years), who had been treated with anticonvulsants for more than 1 year. Patients who had taken multiple vitamins before the blood test and those who have the limitation of physical activity (wheelchair-bound) were excluded from the study. We evaluated the ...

VitaminD deficiency and its risk factors in Malaysian children with epilepsy
SUMMARY
Objective: Long-term use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is a significant risk factor for vitamin D deficiency in children with epilepsy. The aims of our study were to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors for vitamin D deficiency among Malaysian children with epilepsy.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of ambulant children with epilepsy on long-term AEDs for >1 year seen in three tertiary hospitals in Malaysia from April 2014 to April 2015. Detailed assessment of pubertal status, skin pigmentat...

To treat or not to treat drug-refractory epilepsy by the ketogenic diet? That is the question
Abstract
Epilepsy is a serious neurologic disorder worldwide which affects about 1% of the population (ca. 50 million people), the highest prevalence occurring in both children and elderly. Apart from idiopathic forms, etiology of the disease involves multiple brain risk factors – the most frequent being cerebrovascular diseases, tumours and traumatic injuries. Several treatment options exist, including, for instance, pharmacotherapy, vagal nerve stimulation or epilepsy surgery. In spite ...

The roles of vitamin B12 and vitamin D in children with intractable epilepsy
Abstract: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) can cause vitamin B12 or D deficiency in children with intractable epilepsy. In this study, we measured salivary superoxide dismutase (SOD) and metalloproteinsases (MMP) levels in the patients with vitamin B12 and vitamin D treatment. Cytokines and chemokines were measured using ELISA. The mean salivary value of SOD activity in the control group was 1.75 ± 0.21 U/ml. In the treatment group, the value was 1.33 ± 0.18 U/ml. The ...
